Rauf Denktaş University celebrated the 96th anniversary of the founding President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, President Rauf Raif Denktaş, with the support of Gönyeli Municipality. The memorial ceremony was held at the monumental tomb of President Denktaş. In line with late President Denktaş’s love for the environment, the participants planted a great number of trees in the park surrounding the tomb to represent the love of trees and forests in the country and increase environmental awareness in the society. The planting event took place on Monday, 27 January 2020.
A large number of participants attended the ceremony and showed great enthusiasm for spreading the environmental message of the event. The family of President Denktaş was accompanied by the Rector of Rauf Denktaş University, Prof. Dr. Hasan Ali Bıçak, RDU academic and administrative staff, RDU students, ministers, politicians and members of the Rauf Denktaş Association, as well as a large number of students from Bülent Ecevit Anatolian High School, Yedirowave Primary School and Private Nurseries in Gönyeli Region.
Prof. Dr. Hasan Ali Bıçak outlined the message of the commemoration day by stating that, as Rauf Denktaş University, it is the primary duty of our university to provide education, to engage in research and to serve society. With this, the memories of Rauf Raif Denktaş are kept alive, and his thoughts are passed on to new generations. In this context, he thanked young people, elderly people, politicians and people from all walks of life who had come to celebrate the birthday of Rauf Denktaş at the University’s invitation. He went on to say that the Republic had yet to witness another leader like Rauf Denktaş. He, therefore, stated that it is “our duty to protect our Republic, as it was not established easily. In this context, the saplings planted today are an opportunity to commemorate Rauf Raif Denktaş and to keep our republic alive”. Professor Bıçak also thanked the Mayor of Gönyeli, Mr Ahmet Benli, for supporting the event.
